Empath Read — Free Empath Test & Micro-Expression Trainer
Train your empathic accuracy with a scientifically-inspired micro-expression reading game.
Empath Read is HYVE Tribe's daily empath training game. Built on published research into facial micro-expressions, it shows you brief video clips of real faces expressing subtle emotions and asks you to read them accurately. Get your empath score, build your accuracy over time, and track your progress in a personal empath dashboard.
How to play Empath Read
- 1
Watch a short video clip
Each challenge shows a 1-2 second video clip of a person's face. You watch closely, trying to catch the micro-expression that flickers across the face.
- 2
Identify the emotion
You are given six emotion options (anger, contempt, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, surprise) and you pick the one that matches the micro-expression you observed.
- 3
Check your accuracy
The game shows whether you were correct and, if not, highlights the specific facial cues you should have noticed: eye muscles, lip corners, nose wrinkles, brow position.
- 4
Review your empath score
Your empath score updates after each round, with separate sub-scores for each emotion category. Over time, you see which emotions you read well and which you struggle with.
- 5
Practice daily for improvement
Five minutes a day is enough to build measurable empathic accuracy. The game uses spaced repetition to focus on the emotions you get wrong most often.
Features
Real human faces
All clips are from real actors or volunteers expressing genuine emotion, not synthetic AI-generated faces.
Seven base emotions
Covers anger, contempt, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise — the seven universal emotions identified by Paul Ekman's research.
Individual accuracy tracking
Your accuracy is tracked per emotion, so you can see that you read joy perfectly but struggle with contempt.
Micro and macro practice
Two modes: micro (1-second flicker, very difficult) and macro (3-second sustained, easier for beginners).
Detailed feedback
When you get a challenge wrong, the game highlights the specific face regions that carried the signal.
Daily empath score
A single empath score summary on your dashboard, updated every time you play.

What is an empath test?
Popular "empath tests" are usually personality quizzes asking you whether you cry at movies or get overwhelmed in crowds. HYVE Tribe's Empath Read is different — it's a measurable, repeatable accuracy test that asks one question: how well can you read emotions in other people's faces? This is closer to the academic research on empathic accuracy than self-report empath quizzes. You either identified the micro-expression or you didn't, and the game tracks your accuracy over time.
Based on Paul Ekman's research
The game is built on the research of Paul Ekman and colleagues, who spent decades cataloguing the facial muscle movements associated with each universal emotion. The seven emotions covered — anger, contempt, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise — are the ones Ekman showed are universally recognized across cultures. Each emotion has a specific pattern of facial action units, and with practice, anyone can learn to spot them.
Micro vs macro mode
In micro mode, emotions appear as brief 1-second flickers — the real-world micro-expressions that slip past people's emotional control. This is genuinely difficult; even trained clinicians only score around 70-80% accuracy in micro mode. In macro mode, emotions are held for 3 seconds, making them easier to read. New players usually start in macro mode, build up confidence and pattern recognition, and graduate to micro mode after a few weeks.
Tracking your progress
Empath Read maintains a detailed accuracy profile for each player. You can see your overall accuracy, your accuracy per emotion, your improvement curve over weeks, and your best and worst emotions. Most players start around 50-60% accuracy and reach 70-80% after a few weeks of daily practice. Some players reach 85%+ after sustained training, which is approaching clinical-grade empathic accuracy.
Why train empathic accuracy?
Empathic accuracy — the ability to correctly read what another person is feeling — is a foundational social skill. It's associated with better relationships, more effective communication, reduced interpersonal conflict, and better negotiation outcomes. It's also the specific skill that gets impaired in conditions like autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. Training it is like training any other skill: short, frequent sessions with targeted feedback produce real, measurable improvement.
- Scientifically grounded in Ekman\'s facial action research
- Measurable improvement over weeks of daily practice
- Separate tracking for each emotion category
- Micro and macro difficulty modes
- Tier XP rewards for consistent practice
Frequently asked questions
Is this a real empath test or a personality quiz?
Empath Read is an accuracy test, not a personality quiz. You are measured on whether you correctly identify the emotion in each video clip, not on your self-reported traits.
What emotions does it cover?
The seven universal emotions from Ekman's research: anger, contempt, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise.
Are the faces real people?
Yes. All clips are from real actors or volunteers expressing genuine emotion. None of the clips are AI-generated or synthetic.
How accurate is a good score?
Beginners typically score 50-60% accuracy in macro mode. Trained players reach 75-85%. Clinical-grade trained professionals can score above 90%.
Can I improve my score with practice?
Yes. Research shows that micro-expression reading is a trainable skill. Most players see a 10-20 percentage point improvement after 4-6 weeks of daily practice.
Is it safe for younger users?
Yes. All content is non-graphic, everyday emotional expression suitable for any age.
Does it count toward my tier?
